Why Agnew Equine?
Our friendly, independent and well-established practice is located on the edge of the beautiful Peak District National Park, and covers areas of Staffordshire, Cheshire and Derbyshire. We have a broad client base from pet ponies to international competition horses, which gives a varied case load and makes each day different from the next.
Our practice employs 7 equine vets and we have a supportive and amazing office staff of 9 people. Arnie Agnew, the practice founder has a long career as an equine vet and an invaluable wealth of knowledge you can only acquire with experience. Robin Densem has been a horse vet since 1995 and was awarded a Certificate in Equine Medicine from the Royal College in 2011 and is a particularly experienced mentor. And Stuart Pearson has a 20-year veterinary career beginning in hospitals in Newmarket and has a Certificate in Equine Orthopaedics from the Royal College. He is also one of only 21 vets in the country who is an Advanced Practitioner in Equine Orthopaedics. Each of them is kind, patient and trustworthy and have a bedside manner with horse and client that is second to none. Our practice also has more recent graduates who can give insight about transitioning from life as a new grad/student to life as a practicing ambulatory vet – and are a great crew to be a part of!
We believe in giving hospital-standard care at stable side, so have all the latest mobile diagnostic equipment and encourage clinical freedom and development. We refer to multiple centres depending on the clinical need of the case.

New Graduates
We are an RCVS Approved Graduate Development Practice and are here to support you in your first role in practice. New graduates work under the supervision and direction of senior vets at Agnew Equine and are given increasing responsibility on cases as they show their progression. Whilst fully supported by our senior vets who guide and manage exposure to a variety of cases and build confidence, we think one of the benefits of working at an ambulatory practice versus a hospital setting is that there is more opportunity to get stuck in and gain hands-on, practical experience both in veterinary skills and communication proficiency dealing directly with clients. We offer regular training and observation with our vets with days out in the van together plus both in-house and external CPD throughout the year.
In addition to an interview, we always ask for potential candidates to come and see practice with us. We think it is important that we meet each other and get to know one another in our work setting so both parties can agree it is a good fit. If you are or will be a new graduate soon and are interested in any future positions at Agnew Equine please upload your CV and Cover Letter and let us know why you’re interested in working at our practice and we’ll be in contact should any suitable roles become available.
EMS Students
As part of our commitment to helping mould the vets of the future, our practice regularly has vet students join our team of experienced vets on the road. This gives an insight for students on what it is really like to be an ambulatory vet, and all the opportunities and challenges that can present.
Come along and see what it is like to work through a busy diary – perhaps observe and assist a gastroscope in a home stable, a lameness work-up and all the corresponding X-rays or the dentals and vaccinations we offer on our Saver Days. See what it is like to communicate and work with clients from the straightforward cases to the more complicated ones. The life of an ambulatory horse vet is varied and rewarding and the best way to learn about what you’d like for your career is to give it a go!
If you are a vet student looking for a placement, please fill out this form and we’ll be in touch!
