Sustainability
As a practice, we are proud to be working to become a more environmentally responsible small business. We care deeply for the natural world and animals within it, and want to do our part, as collective small changes can make a BIG difference!
Climate change is already having an impact on our environment which, in turn, does impact the health and well-being of our horses and ponies. Climate change is long-term, consistent changes in climate patterns – hotter summers, warmer, wetter winters, more severe storms, more frequent floods, longer droughts, etc. We saw the impact of flooding recently on our horse population, but while that was very visible, there are other implications like warmer winters extending the life-cycles of parasites, insects being more prevalent in wet, warm conditions, and horses not shedding the weight they should over winter if grass is still growing – having a direct implication on the risk factors for conditions like laminitis.
We are writing a Sustainability Policy working with the 'Greener Veterinary Practice Checklist' from Vet Sustain and are making changes which include improving our recycling, reducing waste, moving more to paperless, reducing use of single use plastics and litter-picking initiatives to name a few.
We have a GREEN TEAM in the practice who are driving these changes - and moving towards continuous improvement.
As vets, we feel it is important for us to be as responsible as we can be in treating our planet with the respect it deserves – and we hope you will join us in this mission.
