Choke in horses is an obstruction or blockage in the food pipe (oesophagus). It is one of the more common causes of an equine emergency.
Signs of a horse with choke include:
- Food material and saliva coming down both nostrils
- Excess saliva from the mouth
- Neck extended (stretched out)
- Difficulty swallowing
- No interest in food, or coughing when trying to eat
- Spasms down the neck
