Choke in horses is an obstruction or blockage in the food pipe (oesophagus). It is one of the more common causes of an equine emergency.

Signs of a horse with choke include:

  • Coughing
  • Food material and saliva coming down both nostrils
  • Excess saliva from the mouth
  • Neck extended (stretched out)
  • Distressed
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • No interest in food, or coughing when trying to eat
  • Spasms down the neck
