Worried about Sweet Itch this spring?
We are ordering our supply of vaccines a bit earlier this year - so please call the office on 01782 510502 or email office@horsevets.co.uk to register your interest and we'll be in touch with more details. If you have any questions we can arrange for you to speak with a vet.
Sweet Itch (Culicoides Hypersensitivity) is a skin disease caused by an allergic reaction to midge bites. The affected areas are usually the mane, back and tail or sometimes the belly and legs. Itching causes rubbing, hair loss and skin damage. Horses can then end up in a cycle where they become very irritated by the constant itching causing more damage and infection.
A vaccine is available to assist in the prevention of Sweet Itch which was originally developed against ringworm. It is a big help for some horses and ponies and consists of 2 doses given 2 weeks apart starting in early to mid-February - as all must be completed before midge/fly eggs hatch.
If you have already told us you want the vaccine there's no need to call just now, we've got you on the list and we'll be in touch.
